Sony and Orkin Design have both debuted roll-up laptops at this year’s CEATEC, but they’re a little late to the party. The laptops share a lot of eerie similarities to the Hao Hua design we saw back in April. Both roll-up into a scroll, use OLED screens and both even have carrying straps.
Orkin Design’s Rolltop consists of an OLED display that can start as a rolled-up mat and deploy as a multi-touch 17-inch laptop. The Orkin laptop can also transform into a tablet PC operable with a stylus, or become a standup flat screen display. A power adapter and other features fit with the carrying canister that comes with a convenient holding strap.
In an ideal world somebody saw Hua’s design, went to him, worked with him and gave him a big fat check. With no mention of his name on or around either of the laptops, this probably isn’t the case. Then again, there’s no telling how long Sony and Orkin have been working on their designs, and it could have been well before April.
Whether he’s credited or not, it’s very cool to see something we described as “Next Generation” become a reality just a few months later. You can check out a simulation of the “Rolltop” below:
