Slow Motion Bullet Impacts

Ten whole minutes of different bullets impacting different materials in super-slow motion.

Below is a video showcasing ten whole minutes of different bullets impacting different materials in super-slow motion. I would normally draw the “gist” portion of the article out, enticing you to view the video below, but there isn’t much more to be said. The video below shows bullets hitting different objects at slower-than-slow speeds. They fire different calibers and different shapes at metal of varying depths, ballistic gel, wood, paper and my favorite, glass, sometimes at different angles. What more could you ask for?

The video, first seen on Kottke.org, claims to be filmed at a ridiculous one million frames per second. Seeing so many frames really injects some perspective into bullets and guns in general. Seeing the bullets travel so slowly–considering how fast bullets actually go–and watching them liquefy upon impact is slightly surreal. On the other end of the spectrum, seeing the damage caused to the unsuspecting blocks of ballistic gel show what really happens when bullets tear through flesh, something Hollywood rarely seems to get right.
