PA TV and The Splendid Magic of Penny Arcade

Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik started Penny Arcade in 1998, over ten years ago. Throughout their years as an internet entity they’ve achieved a lot more than simply being one of the most recognized webcomics in existence.

As well as publishing a new comic three times weekly they’ve crafted numerous humorous comics focusing on individual games; raised exponentially more money for Child’s Play each year they’re involved and they’ve even started and successfully run the Penny Arcade Expo for 6 years, their very own gamer/geek tradeshow. One would imagine a lot could be gleaned form such captains of the webcomic industry but little information about how they did it (and how they do it now) was available. Not anymore.

Penny Arcade recently started Penny Arcade TV, a channel portion of their website that will update four times monthly. As of now, there will be three episodes of Penny Arcade: The Series and one Blamimation per month. Penny Arcade: The Series is exactly what it sounds like: a series of episodes documenting the current life of Jerry, Mike and the rest of their staff as they continue to build the empire that is Penny Arcade. Just as exciting are the monthly Blamimations. Blamimations (a word I plan to use as much as possible) are monthly animated shorts by Scott Kurtz (of PvP Online, Secret Life of Cartoonists) and Kris Straub (of Starslip, Chainsawsuit), spectacular cartoonists in their own right.

Their new series plans to document the here and now of Penny Arcade but they have those interested in their past covered as well. Next March, The Splendid Magic of Penny Arcade: The 11 1/2 Anniversary Edition will come to fill the hearts of those looking to broaden their knowledge of the people responsible for “Gabe” and “Tycho” as we know them today. The book’s pages include original art, a few of their favorite comics and the origins of characters like Fruit Fucker and Div. As well as talking about the comic, it also looks deeper into the cultural phenomenon of Penny Arcade giving an insider’s perspective of PAX, showing off the process of writing a typical PA comic and lots of other tidbits any Penny Arcade fan surely couldn’t live without.
