Life Imitates Art, Scott Kurtz Style

Scott Kurtz, author and illustrator of PvP Online, recently crafted a story arc in which two of his characters vied to become “Mayor” of the Tasty Bean coffee shop. How does one rise to such an esteemed position? Through the fictional app Hopscotch, of course. As explained by Brent Sienna, Hopscotch is “this cool little app for your phone that keeps track of everywhere you go and gives you points and awards for hopping around town.” While entirely fictional, Hopscotch is a parody of real apps like Foursquare and Gowalla.

Apparently, the arc got so much attention that Starbucks contacted the creators of Foursquare to create a similar deal. By becoming the “Mayor” of a particular Starbucks (done by checking into that location more than anyone else) you get a $1 discount on “a new however-you-want-it Frappuccino blended beverage. Any size, any flavor.”

Even better, Foursquare allows business owners to create similar “Mayor specials”. If there’s an establishment you enjoy frequenting, ask the manager to sign up at the Foursquare website to allow patrons specials while potentially increasing business.
