High Dynamic Range photography is a simple technique that combines multiple different exposures of the same picture to form a richer, more intense final image. When not overdone, HDR can create a look and feel that more closely emulates human perception making it a very popular choice for landscapes and beautiful vistas. Recently, a small special effects studio based out of San Francisco took it all one step further and ventured into the unknown realm of HDR video.
Using two Canon 5D Mark IIs, Soviet Montage applied the HDR concept to moving pictures. They recorded two versions of the same scene–one overexposed and blown out and the other shadowy and underexposed–and put them together. This gives the same, (in some cases) realistic effect many strive for with HDR photography only on a much larger scale.
Details are scarce on how exactly this was achieved but the process by which the videos were blended seems especially important.
