Each day in the Miniatur Wunderland, 900 trains with 12,000 wagons travel several hundred kilometers. There are 250 computer controlled vehicles that drive themselves around town. The Fire Brigade responds dynamically to fires that break out and the police pull over anyone disobeying the law. On top of all that, there are over 200 push-button actions that allow visitors to actively participate in the attractions.

But wait, there’s more! The staff of Miniatur Wunderland are currently at work building new sections covering France, Italy and parts of Africa. Instead of buying four different devices that you’re going to use everyday, designer Prashant Chandra’s Lifebook concept combines them all. It’s completely compartmentalized and usable separate, but when you put it together, you have one device that’s a lot less redundant.

The proposed Lifebook is a laptop computer concept based on the principle of “shared hardware”. Currently a lot of hardware is wasted when we use separate devices, as there is often a lot of “repeat” of data stored and features. For example if I have my songs on my music player, why do I have to block the same amount of storage on my laptop? Similarly, if I have a processor sitting in my tablet, why can it not also run/assist my laptop? If I have a fully functional camera with its own memory and image processing power, why do I need to have it repeated in my laptop?

As Google’s Android operating system grows in popularity, I hear about more things “running Android” or “using the Android framework”. Being open-source, Android can be used by anyone for anything, completely free and for this reason, it can be found on so many devices. It’s on mobile phones mostly, but now I see it running on tablets and nooks and the Kindles (oh my!). Such wide use sets a standard and moves away from the idea that everything should be proprietary. At the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show, Polaroid unveiled a camera that will change the way cameras are looked at, all made possible by the Android operating system.

The Polaroid SC1630 Smart Camera is a camera like no other camera before it. Not because it has the most megapixels or the best digital zoom but because Polaroid decided to make it more than a camera. Looking at the pictures, the SC1630 looks a lot like a smart phone with a big old camera attached and essentially, that’s what it is. With a 3.2 inch touch-enabled, widescreen display, most people that have used an Android phone or tablet will have no problem picking one up.

Cameras have been moving toward this sort of innovation for a while now, but through the use of the Android operating system, Polaroid has exponentially increased the usability and functionality of the phone without having to do the work themselves. The SC1630 can install and run existing Android apps, including those that make taking and editing pictures easy, fun and accessible. With built-in wireless capabilities, users can take, edit, crop and share photos from the same device. Upload your favorite photos to Facebook directly from your camera just as you would with a smartphone, except with all the capabilities of a regular camera.

Outside of being a step in the right direction for Polaroid, I’m confident that other camera companies will soon realize what a big deal this basic design shift is. As it stands, many people have sated their need for point and shoot cameras with smartphones, seeing how smartphones have surpassed most consumer-grade cameras while still maintaining a quality good enough for Tumblr or Facebook. A camera with the same functionality of a smartphone will begin to regain some of the market share lost to the EVOs and iPhones.

After posting about the Panoramic Camera Ball, quite a few people asked me where they could find one of their own. Now, instead of telling them that sadly, they aren’t for sale, I can point them to the Tamaggo. It isn’t a purchasable product yet, but it’s on the way to the mass market as soon as possible.

The Tamaggo is this little, non-camera-shaped camera that allows you to take horizontal or vertical panoramic photos as well as take full Sky/Ground 360 degree pictures. Inside the 7 ounce device is a 14 megapixel camera, a 2 inch diagonal touchscreen and support for both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. These features allow you to take enormous pictures, view them and upload them to your computer or favorite sharing service.

If you can’t wait to throw your money at this product, your best bet for now is to visit their website and sign up for email updates. As soon as they’re ready to sell this thing, I’m sure you’ll be the first to find out.

This is where we delve into the harder-to-believe part. Liquipel isn’t something that protects your device in case of a slight liquid exposure. There’s a demo video of the Liquipel team completely submerging a working, powered-on iPhone in water, taking it back out again and proceeding as normal. While they suggest not actually submerging your phone just to wow your friends, it’s a very powerful demonstration of how mind-blowing Liquipel really is.

With the amount of camera apps available today, you can do just about anything to a picture on your smartphone. You can over-expose, under-expose, add filters, crop, rotate, add cats and make people fat (and really, that’s just barely scratching the surface). Smartphones can do it all digitally, but when it comes to physical copies of pictures, Sincerely Inc. knows what’s up. While most camera apps afford you ways to capture and manipulate pictures, Sincerely is more interested in turning those digital pictures into something you can touch and feel.

Dotti is the latest release from Sincerely and it transforms your supersmart futurephone into a simple, disposable camera. A very basic idea, sure, but the real magic lies in getting the photos “developed”. For just 4.99 (5.99 for orders outside the US) you’ll receive “12 beautiful 4×6 inch prints” delivered directly to you, in less than a weeks time. The app acts just like a disposable camera with one important difference: you’re given the chance to review each photo before adding it to the roll you’d like developed.

Now, the astute among you might note that it would be slightly cheaper to have them sent to your local one-hour printing drugstore but there are a few hitches associated. Not only will they not deliver them directly to your house, getting them from your phone to a computer to the drugstore is a hassle I’ll gladly spend a few bucks to avoid.

Toppppp.com is a website that elegantly lists the top 100 best, highest-rated products found on Amazon. Instead of finding a list of all of the coolest things in existence (as I first thought I would), I found a list of simple, everyday items that seem to work well and as intended.

All of these products have close to 5 stars on Amazon, and enough reviews (usually over 50) to make their rating significant. The products were manually collected page by page from over 100 Amazon categories.

Some of the products were the best in a specific sub-category that we searched through, like this Stapler, with 4.8 out of 5 stars.

Others were so highly-rated that they were included even if their subcategory might not have otherwise been represented. For example this Waterproof iPod Shuffle is pretty much its own category, and 48 of its 53 reviews are 5 stars. In a few cases we used our best judgment, for example picking a 4.7 star product that was 150 cheaper than one with 4.8 stars.

Some entire product categories didn’t make the cut if there wasn’t an awesome-enough product at the top. This digital camera is pretty good, but only had 4.4 stars out of 5 — not good enough for toppppp.com!

Oh, and after all that, we read through hundreds and hundreds of Amazon reviews so we could summarize what reviewers said about each product. Hover over an item to see its review summary.

Things that make the cut include scissors, a handheld blender, a bathroom scale, a wireless router. There isn’t anything inherently special about the items themselves except that a bunch of people need them to perform simple functions and they perform those functions as advertised. If you need a chef’s knife, an HDMI cable or even a bouncy castle (or if you just want a list of useful things you could see yourself owning), check out Toppppp.com.

The 2011 Suzuki Q-Concept, measuring a mere 8 feet long by 4 feet wide is intended to function as a city car and will make its official debut at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.

Powering the snail-on-wheels is an electric motor and your usual battery pack with an estimated range of about 31 miles. It tops out at about 37 miles per hour.

The Q-Concept looks interesting sure, but can it handle a speed bump? The car sounds amazing on paper but in reality would require an entire restructuring of a city to accommodate the unique shape and low top speed. Either way, still fun to look at.
