A bright young Miskatonic University student has disappeared, having checked in to an infamous Arkham boarding house to study its reported supernatural properties. Now, as the celebration of Walpurgis Eve approaches, you and your fellow investigators are tasked with venturing into the decaying Witch House and solving a mystery that has plagued Arkham for generations. But are you prepared to face the horrors that await you?

The scenario comes complete with all of the objects, obstacles, lock cards and keeper actions required to play it, as well as the prologue and map setup. Though the expansion doesn’t introduce and new game mechanics, there are a few brand new lock and object cards, but we’ll get to those later.

As the Keeper (played in this week’s episode by my father) was seeding the cards, the rest of us chose our characters. There were four players total, leaving me to play two investigators (a four Investigator game seems to be a bit more balanced than three). Having recently bought Forbidden Alchemy I was keen on using the new guys so I went with Dexter Drake the Magician and Carolyn Fern the Psychologist. The other players went with their favorites, Ashcan Pete the Drifter and Gloria Goldberg the Author (honestly, I’m not sure where our group would be without that antiquated typewriter and Ashcan’s trusty sidekick Duke).

After everyone settled in (the card seeding can be so tedious) the Keeper reads us the story so far. We’re all big fans of the flavor elements of Mansions of Madness compared to Arkham Horror so everyone shuts up and leans in. The Keeper tells us all about Nola and how, after moving into the low-rent “Witch House” she began trying to bend time and space, believing the Witch House was the key. Our investigators all know it’s a bunch of bull, but we gladly enter the house at the behest of the nervous student, assuring him his fears are misplaced, that there’s nothing to worry about. We’re sure Nola is just fine.

All’s quiet throughout the house as the investigators spread out to explore. Gloria stays with Dexter going toward the bathroom, providing moral support in the way of skill points, while Ashcan travels deeper into the house. Carolyn makes her way to the work shed outside and, after picking a simple lock, has one more Knife than she started with. Dexter and Gloria make their way around the corner and come across Nola’s Journal, as well as a helpful Sedative in the bathroom cabinet. Meanwhile, Ashcan has just come across a Spectral Guard, one that tells him a password will be required to pass. Dexter and Gloria make their way back to Ashcan as Carolyn joins back up after her short but spooky detour in the shed. As Dexter thumbs through the journal, he begins to realize something may actually be happening. While he didn’t believe a word of it before, Nola’s writings are rather convincing. With the addition of a spirit guarding a room in the house, he begins to get that bad feeling in the pit of his stomach.

Finding the correct passage in Nola’s Journal, Dexter dispels the Spectral Guard, the only thing between him and the unearthly Alien Statue. As he picks it up, his consciousness slips from his body and travels to some other part of the Witch House. It’s here that he sees what must be a portal to another world, something he had read about briefly in the journal. Upon returning to his own body, he’s left holding the statue. It looks like any other carved lump of stone, but tingles him to his soul, a power unlike any other coursing through him.

Upon recounting his short out of body experience, they all realize the portal must be in the attic, the only place left to explore. Carolyn and Ashcan go in first and what they find causes them to reconsider everything they thought they knew about reality. A Shoggoth, formless, protoplasmic servant of the Great Old Ones, is waiting for them. There’s nothing left to do but open fire, Ashcan, with his new found shotgun and Carolyn with her trusty Walther Model 9. Though the mass of tar and eyes and tentacles almost fills the room entirely, Carolyn and Ashcan can barely get a few shots in before the abomination charges them. Gloria and Dexter hear the commotion: the gunfire and more importantly the inhuman screams of their companions and make their way up the stairs.

As Carolyn and Ashcan fire wildly, the abomination is unflinching in its advance. After only taking a couple of rounds, barely injured, the monster begins to engulf Ashcan. Thinking quickly, Ashcan shoves the shotgun as far into the mass as he can, smiles maniacally and pulls the trigger. This proves enough, though barely, and the monster is finally bested. Thick, acidic Ichor sprays in every direction, covering them both. A brief reprieve eases them slightly as they clean up, though they have no idea what lies in store beyond the portal.

Everyone regroups in the attic and Dexter again has his nose in the journal. The journal begins to glow a blinding, stinging green and all at once, the attic falls from under them. The team find themselves in another place, another realm entirely. Upon being ripped through the portal, Dexter’s consciousness escapes once again. He sees Nola lying on a stone slab surrounded by chanting, robed figures. A bleeding, Black Book sits atop a desecrated Altar. Everyone readies their wills and their weapons as the faint sounds of chanting echoes towards them.

There are three doors that lead from this otherworldly room, and again they split up. Despite what they’ve all just seen, they know that Nola doesn’t have much time. Carolyn decides to take the door to the right, up into the tower, Dexter and Gloria the door to the left. Ashcan, poor, bleeding Ashcan, bravely makes his way toward the chanting.

Though they proceed with caution, Dexter and Gloria are faced with no opposition. Through three doors they’ve gone, and three empty rooms they’ve found. Dexter’s feeling goes from bad to worse. As he passes through another door, an impossible silence wells up around him. He can barely hear Gloria’s screams over the sounds of infernal alien flutes. One moment he’s there, wherever there might actually be, and the next he simply isn’t. His existence is erased entirely, Dexter Drake the Magician is suddenly no more. At the same moment, in the realm of Earthly beings, Michael McGlen the Gangster seeks solace in the old Witch House, on the run from an angry mob after a job gone wrong. Panting through the porch door, solace is not something he’ll find on this night.

Carolyn, immediately upon entering the tower hallway is attacked by a mass of smoke that pours from the corner. It takes two rounds from her Walther to realize that it’s another monster, and screaming, she barely slips past into the next room. She searches for anything she can to fight off the beast, and tries to ease the loss of her mind but she finds Nothing of Interest. Peeking back outside she sees the thing still stalking, and she thinks of Nola. In a rage she charges, firing round after round, landing less than half of her shots. It proves enough, but upon death, the hound lets loose a shriek that sends fire through her senses and slowly blackens her vision. Through the coming darkness she can see the mangled body of the creature, but even staring up at the flickering light proves worthless. Carolyn has lost her sight.

Mustering what willpower she has left, Gloria begins to collect Dexter’s things. She unsheathes the Swordcane and gives it a whip to the left and right. Barely given enough time to mourn the loss of someone she can’t quite remember, a tar-like substance begins to ooze through the crevices around the door. Fleeing yet another Shoggoth, she is unaware that only more horror lies ahead.

Entering the portal room, she meets with Michael McGlen, having just been sucked through the attic portal. Carolyn comes stumbling back through from the Hallway and before any of them can utter a word, they all turn toward the sound of barking, shouting and shotgun fire. Throwing caution to the wind, they rush to the aid of Ashcan, only to find yet another of the formless, tar-like monsters guarding the door to where they’re sure Nola is being kept.

As the clock inches closer to midnight on this Walpurgis Eve, the sound of chanting engulfs them all. The dull roar of monsters and gunfire is nothing compared to the demonic sounds all around them. More…things flood from the door: a zombie and a hooded figure join the Shoggoth in the hallway. Ashcan and Michael look at each other and with a glance, they both know what must be done. They charge wildly past the growing horde, and manage to slip through the door to the Ceremony Room taking minimal damage from the creatures. Shoulder to shoulder, robed figures surround Nola, chanting as she begins to writhe and silently scream. All at once the figures turn toward Ashcan and Michael but through the crowd they catch a glimpse of Keziah Mason, the original owner of The Witch House. Keziah glides through the crowd, floating above ground, her eyes fixed on our brave, near-insane heroes. She begins to cackle.

The sound of their guns is lost among the chanting crowd. The door they came through bursts open as the Witch wills every monster to her. By some ungodly power, even more things squeezed into that tiny cave room, every one with hate for our investigators. Still fixed on the most important target, only a few bullets graze Keziah’s body and she barely flinches. Her once calm, collected face is now twisted with anger. As the sea of people begin to engulf them both, death only seconds away, Ashcan raises his shotgun for the last time.

Eyes tightly shut, he fires. The shot rings true and by luck alone, it lands squarely in the Witch’s chest. As her heart explodes, all sounds abruptly leave the room. The Witch’s corpse crumbles to the ground and the creatures and hooded figures seem to slide backwards into nothingness, leaving only the heartless body of Keziah behind. Gloria rushes in to Nola’s aid as she awakens from her terrible sleep, confused but otherwise unhurt. By the skin of their teeth, they’ve done it. Though the memory of Dexter Drake is lost forever, they’ve survived the Season of the Witch.

At first glance, the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. is a spoof website that fake superheroes can visit to “purchase” costumes, disguises, maps of the negative zone, bottled invisibility; you know, the usual stuff. So, I browsed around and added a few things to my cart only to find that all of these products are completely purchasable. So, if the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. is a real website that sells real products, maybe this is where real superheroes come for their real superhero supply needs.

Now, stick with me here, but a Secret Identity starter kit is just $20. I think it goes much deeper than that. I think the actual products are just a front for what’s really going on. Yeah, I’m sure they would gladly send some unknowing schmuck a wig and fake glasses for a bit of fun but with the right promo code at checkout they’ll give you a full workup. Birth certificates, social security cards, high school promo photos, financial history, the whole nine yards.

I think I’ve stumbled onto huge something here. If you’re reading this now, they’re after me. I’m sure of it. They know where I live, where I work and though they supply the good guys, I’m sure I’m just a speck in the grand scheme. A speck of dust, just waiting to be blown away. They’re here. Get out.

In theory, wearing cologne is a great idea. Who doesn’t want to smell good? The problem is, I’ve yet to find a cologne that smells “good”; they normally just smell like high-pitched tree bark or stinging gasoline farts. To combat this (or maybe just to cash in on something popular) the company JADS International is making nerd-inspired colognes based on our favorite properties.

JADS are the “brains” behind products like Shirtless Kirk Cologne and Pon Farr Perfume, as well as Slave Leia and Eau Lando.

Their latest offerings are based on the currently most popular Avengers (read: the ones with movies about them) and I’m sure they smell great. Even if the liquid inside is crap enough to kill a person, the ideas and designs are interesting, though maybe a bit over the top.

PATRIOT Cologne

A cologne that pays homage to the confident, stand-up-to-bullies, hard working average Joe in every man. PATRIOT Cologne is both reserved and sexy; like a symbol on a shield or a moniker on a motorcycle helmet. Fresh notes of green lime and white pepper are the first to hit with dry oak wood, sandalwood and tequila accords finishing the adventure. Perfect for any time or place, PATRIOT Cologne puts the Novus Mundus in your strong, sensuous hands for you to embrace and discover.

Mark VII Cologne

A resolutely sophisticated cologne forged from the sea, the sun, the earth, and a touch of devil-may-care whimsy. Transparent, aromatic, and modern in nature, Mark VII combines mandarin, neroli, nasturtium and jasmine layered with light patchouli to create a contemporary expression of “I don’t play well with others” confidence; leaving you always ready for whatever a genius, billionaire, playboy-philanthropist might encounter along the way.

SMASH! Cologne

Very unusual and rare materials have been brought together to create a woody aquatic cologne evoking both a serene sense of timeless freedom and a single-minded, unbridled passion for life. Yuzu, bergamot and tarragon create clean, clear top notes along with unexpected accords of water lily and nutmeg. SMASH! then carries an intense woody drydown enriched with Indian sandalwood, vetiver, musk and sharp cedar. Complimentary to a full range of emotions, it wears well no matter where—at work, the lab or an evening out on the town.

Worthy Cologne

This woody citrus cologne is a unique, meaningful combination of bergamot, frozen ginger and wheatgrass blended with a hint of fresh natural grapefruit and layered deeply with aromatic cypress. Basenotes are possessed with sensual, seductive tones of dark amber and cedarwood, protecting and enhancing a deep, dry masculine (dare we say almost God-like?) musk.

Instead of buying four different devices that you’re going to use everyday, designer Prashant Chandra’s Lifebook concept combines them all. It’s completely compartmentalized and usable separate, but when you put it together, you have one device that’s a lot less redundant.

The proposed Lifebook is a laptop computer concept based on the principle of “shared hardware”. Currently a lot of hardware is wasted when we use separate devices, as there is often a lot of “repeat” of data stored and features. For example if I have my songs on my music player, why do I have to block the same amount of storage on my laptop? Similarly, if I have a processor sitting in my tablet, why can it not also run/assist my laptop? If I have a fully functional camera with its own memory and image processing power, why do I need to have it repeated in my laptop?

As Google’s Android operating system grows in popularity, I hear about more things “running Android” or “using the Android framework”. Being open-source, Android can be used by anyone for anything, completely free and for this reason, it can be found on so many devices. It’s on mobile phones mostly, but now I see it running on tablets and nooks and the Kindles (oh my!). Such wide use sets a standard and moves away from the idea that everything should be proprietary. At the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show, Polaroid unveiled a camera that will change the way cameras are looked at, all made possible by the Android operating system.

The Polaroid SC1630 Smart Camera is a camera like no other camera before it. Not because it has the most megapixels or the best digital zoom but because Polaroid decided to make it more than a camera. Looking at the pictures, the SC1630 looks a lot like a smart phone with a big old camera attached and essentially, that’s what it is. With a 3.2 inch touch-enabled, widescreen display, most people that have used an Android phone or tablet will have no problem picking one up.

Cameras have been moving toward this sort of innovation for a while now, but through the use of the Android operating system, Polaroid has exponentially increased the usability and functionality of the phone without having to do the work themselves. The SC1630 can install and run existing Android apps, including those that make taking and editing pictures easy, fun and accessible. With built-in wireless capabilities, users can take, edit, crop and share photos from the same device. Upload your favorite photos to Facebook directly from your camera just as you would with a smartphone, except with all the capabilities of a regular camera.

Outside of being a step in the right direction for Polaroid, I’m confident that other camera companies will soon realize what a big deal this basic design shift is. As it stands, many people have sated their need for point and shoot cameras with smartphones, seeing how smartphones have surpassed most consumer-grade cameras while still maintaining a quality good enough for Tumblr or Facebook. A camera with the same functionality of a smartphone will begin to regain some of the market share lost to the EVOs and iPhones.

After posting about the Panoramic Camera Ball, quite a few people asked me where they could find one of their own. Now, instead of telling them that sadly, they aren’t for sale, I can point them to the Tamaggo. It isn’t a purchasable product yet, but it’s on the way to the mass market as soon as possible.

The Tamaggo is this little, non-camera-shaped camera that allows you to take horizontal or vertical panoramic photos as well as take full Sky/Ground 360 degree pictures. Inside the 7 ounce device is a 14 megapixel camera, a 2 inch diagonal touchscreen and support for both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. These features allow you to take enormous pictures, view them and upload them to your computer or favorite sharing service.

If you can’t wait to throw your money at this product, your best bet for now is to visit their website and sign up for email updates. As soon as they’re ready to sell this thing, I’m sure you’ll be the first to find out.

Decades ago, people dreamed of flying cars and robot housemaids, but Liquipel is a product that really shows off what “the future” can be. Liquipel is a “nano-coating” that aids in keeping your electronic devices safe in the event of accidental exposure to water or other liquids. It isn’t a “case” but a “treatment” applied to your phone. For just $59 and the price of shipping (which is “Grand Opening Free” right now) you can have your whole phone coated in a virtually undetectable shield.

This is where we delve into the harder-to-believe part. Liquipel isn’t something that protects your device in case of a slight liquid exposure. There’s a demo video of the Liquipel team completely submerging a working, powered-on iPhone in water, taking it back out again and proceeding as normal. While they suggest not actually submerging your phone just to wow your friends, it’s a very powerful demonstration of how mind-blowing Liquipel really is.

This year, Archaia will be releasing a graphic novel series based on the Jim Henson’s The Storyteller television series. The books will be compilations from all sorts of wonderful people and still hold to the themes set forth in the original Storyteller series. Put simply, some of my favorite writers and illustrators are bringing back the magic that made The Storyteller so much fun. Oh, and I’m sure anyone that’s seen the show is going to have a pretty difficult time not doing the voices.

The Archaia site lists all sorts of people involved, including “Roger Langridge (The Muppet Show comic, Thor the Mighty Avenger), Marjorie Liu (Black Widow), Ron Marz (Green Lantern, Artifacts), Jeff Parker (Thor, Thunderbolts), Francesco Francavilla (Detective Comics), Chris Eliopoulos (Franklin Richards) and Janet Lee (Return of the Dapper Men). Plus: a never-before-seen story adapted from a screenplay by The Storyteller’s original author, Academy Award® winner Anthony Minghella (The English Patient).”

You can get a sneak peek of the first book on the Archaia website, and the set up they have lets you read it like you would a real comic. Katie Cook also gave us a sneak peek of her part, and says that she was asked to work in a very different style than she’s used to. “It’s not quite as cutesy-wootsy-shmootsy as I currently work. It’s different, I got a chance to branch out a bit and I had a great time doing it.” Here’s a small slice of her part, but you’ll have to pick up the book when it comes out to see the rest.

hitRECord is an “open-collaborative production company” that allows creators and artists from around the world to collaborate. One person might make a video that another person puts to music that another person remixes and superimposes dinosaurs into. The way RegularJOE (Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s name on the website) puts it, “Remix isn’t theft, it’s…how we create.”–A very basic but incredibly accurate description of hitRECord as a whole.
