Slow motion videos will always hold a special place in my heart, and further, a post on my website.

This video comes to us from the Danish television show Dumt & Farligt and they do all sorts of stupid things that look cool at 1500 frames per second.

PAX East held host to many a wonderful thing this year but surprisingly my favorite cosplay of the show had nothing to do with video games.

The costume, created by Clara Kim, comes from an episode of the Doctor Who reboot, “The Girl in the Fireplace”. One of the greatest (and heart-string pulling) episodes of the second series, the robot antagonists are both beautiful and terrifying. Despite their intricacy, the pictures found over on The PA Report show off just how much works(wo)manship went into the creation of the costume.

For those interested in going deeper, Clara posted a link to the SmugMug gallery of the build process with over a hundred pictures of how the costume was put together.

The thing that really makes this costume work for me is the head. Complete with a removable mask, Clara worked to faithfully recreate the robotic head seen in the episode. She also fashioned the costume in a way that allows her to hide inside the dress, adding an extra level of creepiness when she pulls the mask off.

Update: We have decided a winner for our Wipeout giveaway! Thanks to everyone that participated and keep an eye out for any future contests!

ABC’s hit show Wipeout! features people doing stupid stuff for a bunch of money. These crazy people run through moving, swinging and bouncing obstacle courses that are made to give them as much of a beating as possible (not a bad thing). If you ever wondered how ABC makes sure no contestants get hurt (but still make the show fun), you’ll definitely want to meet the Black and Blue Crew. They’re the team responsible for “testing” the Wipeout! courses, which luckily for us means running the courses with the intention of failing, making sure that no true harm befalls any of the contestants.

The Black and Blue Crew are the last line of defense between the contestants getting hurt and the contestants staying safe. I’m sure there’s a team of designers that plan all of the obstacles out but the Black and Blue Crew are the ones that get poked, prodded, punched and punted to make sure the courses are “safe”. In their downtime, they also commentate on some older footage from the show, discussing what contestants might have done wrong, or what they could have done better. You can check out a teaser clip of this below, but be sure to visit ABC.com for the full videos.

Each week, 24 energetic contestants of all ages, shapes and sizes go head-to-head through four rounds of demanding but hilarious obstacle courses to win the title of “Wipeout Champion” and that $50,000 grand prize. In the end, only one contestant will be victorious. Everyone else will Wipeout!

Meet the Black & Blue crew, a highly trained, elite group of individuals responsible for testing the obstacles on Wipeout. These extremely athletic, sometimes hilarious, and always insane men and women are masters of the course – constantly testing and re-testing until they live up to their name.

Dave Rapoza spends his time reinterpreting some of your most beloved cartoon characters into true-to-life portraits. The way RegularJOE (Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s name on the website) puts it, “Remix isn’t theft, it’s…how we create.”–A very basic but incredibly accurate description of hitRECord as a whole.
Ranging from an affordable $10 to a “rich eclectics only” $7,000, Art from Steel will immortalize anything you can dream of in cold, spiky metal. From cars and Terminators to Star Wars and Mickey Mouse, Art from Steel has a huge selection of pre-made statues for purchase.
What’s that? Still have a soul? In special circumstances such as this they’ll do their best to “make almost anything from steel and reproduce ideas and or images to exact specifications.” They really aren’t afraid to talk themselves up, and with good reason.

The way RegularJOE (Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s name on the website) puts it, “Remix isn’t theft, it’s…how we create.”–A very basic but incredibly accurate description of hitRECord as a whole.

This year, Archaia will be releasing a graphic novel series based on the Jim Henson’s The Storyteller television series. The books will be compilations from all sorts of wonderful people and still hold to the themes set forth in the original Storyteller series. Put simply, some of my favorite writers and illustrators are bringing back the magic that made The Storyteller so much fun. Oh, and I’m sure anyone that’s seen the show is going to have a pretty difficult time not doing the voices.

The Archaia site lists all sorts of people involved, including “Roger Langridge (The Muppet Show comic, Thor the Mighty Avenger), Marjorie Liu (Black Widow), Ron Marz (Green Lantern, Artifacts), Jeff Parker (Thor, Thunderbolts), Francesco Francavilla (Detective Comics), Chris Eliopoulos (Franklin Richards) and Janet Lee (Return of the Dapper Men). Plus: a never-before-seen story adapted from a screenplay by The Storyteller’s original author, Academy Award® winner Anthony Minghella (The English Patient).”

You can get a sneak peek of the first book on the Archaia website, and the set up they have lets you read it like you would a real comic. Katie Cook also gave us a sneak peek of her part, and says that she was asked to work in a very different style than she’s used to. “It’s not quite as cutesy-wootsy-shmootsy as I currently work. It’s different, I got a chance to branch out a bit and I had a great time doing it.” Here’s a small slice of her part, but you’ll have to pick up the book when it comes out to see the rest.

Yoni Alter, self-professed thinker and maker, has created a fun little piece called The Eyes Have It. It shows off how distinctive so many cartoon character’s eyes are and it’s fun to try and guess them all. There’s a static picture of it below, but it really needs to be interacted with to be fully experienced.
I’m not really a beer drinker myself (and by that I mean I can’t stand the stuff) but if there were ever a marketing campaign enough to convince me my opinion was wrong, this would be it. The behind-the-scenes video is below as well but keep in mind that it isn’t your normal “behind-the-scenes” fare. I guess what I’m trying to say is, even if you don’t drink or you hate Heineken, these are still two amazingly-produced videos worth the time it’ll take to get into them.
