When Bethesda purchased the Fallout license from Interplay all those years ago, the sale contract allowed Interplay to retain the rights to the Fallout MMO. Interplay wasn’t really in the best shape as a company but since 2007 they’ve allegedly been working on the Fallout MMO, codenamed “Project V13″. We even wrote once in 2009 that Masthead Studios (the company making Earthrise) were allowing Interplay to use the same technology and tools to develop the Fallout MMO.

What I would have thought was bad news then, but I realize is probably great news now: Bethesda now owns all of the rights for the Fallout franchise, including those to publish a Fallout MMO. After purchasing the license from Interplay, they licensed the Fallout MMO rights back to Interplay given two conditions: 1) Interplay secured $30 million in financing and 2) Interplay began full scale game development by April of 2009. This disallowed Interplay from simply sitting on the rights to create the game, which due to a lack of funds, is exactly what was happening. Of course, Interplay can continue with their “Project V13″ game, so long as it has nothing to do with Fallout.

Put simply, Bethesda now has the ability to make the Fallout MMO! Will they? Eh, it doesn’t seem as though they have any plans to do any such thing, but it does seem that allowing Interplay take a crack at it is a good sign. Maybe one day. For now I’m happy with everything they’ve given me with Fallout 3 and New Vegas, there are still hundreds of hours of discovery to be had.

Outside of the anything that happens inside Skyrim, beyond the story, the quests and the loot, there is the geographic setting. Beautifully rendered caves and mountains and skies (oh, the skies) for you to prance around and kill dragons in. Sometimes you’re given the chance take in the sights and sounds but more often than not, something is trying to kill and potentially eat you.

There’s nothing wrong with fighting for your life here and there but YouTube User DeepCameo has given us the chance to take it all in without the fear of being mauled with this time-lapse of Skyrim on Ultra-High settings.
